Haven't you heard? David sailed away on a wooden ship.

The lethal Kent State incident was an unforgettable moment in our boomer generation. I was born in 1951, and later had a very similar experience as yours with Suite Judy Blue Eyes.

I had listened to Judy, Joan and Joni for many years before David and the guys came along.

A year or two ago, my wife and I were privileged to have a close-up seat at the concert that Steve and Judy sang in our hometown, Boone NC.

In my 2017 novel, King of Soul, I wrote a scene in which a girl recalls the event in her life while watching and listening to David and the CSNY guys at the Altamont Music Festival. In her description, she talks about David singing "It's been a long time coming."

But that was an ill-fated concert. Woodstock it was not. People said it represented the rather dismal end of the '60's, and I suppose that is true.

The last scene of my 1969-70 novel story happens at Kent State on May 4, 1970. The scene opens up with these words: "There's somethin' happenin' here; what it is ain't exactly clear. . ."

. . . which was true at the time and still true today.

Last point about David Crosby: His struggles and his

struggling victories mirrored the experience of my generation, because after all, we have all been there before.

Thanks for your reminiscing about a great musician whose life highlighted the struggle of an entire generation.
