I'll never forget the moment I caught sight of the Basilica San Marco.

That golden glow in the sunshine is unforgettable, like nothing else in the world.

And when you go inside. . . the gold! the gold! just goes on and on, glinting and glowing and what an incredible building . . . union of Roman and Byzantine architecture.

What was funny to us at the time, circa 2003, was . . . we had to approach through a wait line at the entrance on a temporary walkway, raised 2 or 3 feet above the flood waters.

Such uniquely incredible beauty surrounded by flood waters! And this is a regular occurrence, as your excellent article mentions.
