Mao must have had second thoughts about it all when he initiated the Cultural revolution several years.
In that 1960's phase, he must have decided that a flowering of opinions among the young people would prove more beneficial than his trusting of the seasoned intellectuals in '57.
But the Cultural revolution turned out to be a nightmare just like the great leap forward turned out to be a disaster.
Eventually, Mao's fatally destructive experiments goto phased out when he died.
THank God for Deng Xiaoping. His reforms set China on a course toward a more reasonable iteration of "communism." If such a thing is even possible.
